A Lifelong Journey Started 10 Years Ago

10 years ago my life changed a lot overnight.  The day before I was a single professional racecar driver who was just starting his racing career with BimmerWorld racing a BMW 325 across the US.  I was starting to get into the groove of traveling and racing in a highly competitive series.  In between races I was still helping out running the family business, Thomas Lumber Company.  This change in my life didn’t happen overnight though.

It started on a crazy weekend in September of 2003.  I met this beautiful girl living in Charleston, SC at a wedding for my friend Mel Myers.  She and I hit it off but she lived 300 miles from me.  Why not ask her out and see what happens.  I did, she said yes, and now I had to find a way to get to Charleston to make this first date happen.  There is a racetrack about 90 miles from Charleston in Pooler, GA that I needed to get some time on before my season ending championship race.  Perfect, I can get some time at the track on Saturday, head to Charleston, take this amazing girl out on a date that night, and head home the next day.  She again said this would be great for her and the date was set.  So I pack my BMW M3 track car with my track goods, head to Roebling Road, attend the track day and go to Charleston for my first date with a smoking hot southern girl.  Now imagine this scene.  I pull up to her house to pick her up.  When my car comes to a stop the brakes emit this high pitched squeal from the racing brakes on it.  The car I am driving and am going to take her out on a date in doesn’t have A/C (didn’t come with it from the BMW), it has racing seats, a rollbar, a big wing on the back, and the BMW motorsport graphics across the hood.  I am hot and sweaty from being at the racetrack and driving the 90 miles to her house in the heat of the south.  I can only imagine that wasn’t the first look she wanted to see that night.  She still went out with me and boy was it worth it.  This was the best first date I ever went on.  That was all it took and I have been smitten since.

Fast forward to July 9th, 2005.  It is now our wedding day.  This wonderful woman not only said yes to our first date but she said yes multiple times to changes in her life including the big one of when I asked her to marry me.  This Saturday was the Saturday after a race at Lime Rock Park and the one before our race in Sonoma, CA.  Are you starting to see a trend here?  I don’t know if she really knew what she was getting into that day she climbed into my BMW to go on a date.  I am so glad she did.

I fall in love with Resa more and more everyday I spend with her.  She is the most beautiful woman I know, she puts God first in her life, she is patient and tolerate of me, she supports me fully in my racing and life decisions, she is the perfect mom, she is generous, she is kind, she is the mother of our two kids, she loves our kids unconditionally, she gives up her time to make sure our family has everything they need, and the list goes on.  I can sit here all day describing how special of a person Resa Thomas is.  She is the one person who helps to make me a better person and without her I know my life would be empty.

I am very happy to be celebrating this 10-year anniversary with her.  Unfortunately I can’t do it in person today.  I am stuck in Canada at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park for round 5 of our Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season.  Again are you starting to see a trend here?  And again she is amazing enough to support me over and over in my career.  I love Resa more than words can say and can’t wait for her to travel to Canada tomorrow.  I can’t wait to give her a big hug and a kiss for our anniversary.  Until then I am writing this to let he know how special she is in my life.  I LOVE YOU RESA THOMAS!  THANK YOU FOR BEING THE GREAT WOMAN/WIFE/MOM IN OUR INCREDIBLE JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE!
