Coaching with some cool equipment

This past weekend I went down to Sebring to coach a couple of guys from the Florida area in their Porsches. With any coaching assignment I take with a several pieces of electrical equipment that I know every airport scanner in the US has to think is some kind of bomb or conspiracy to commit a crime. I always know they are going to stop me but so far I have been good. These pieces of equipment are a couple of Traqmate Complete Data systems, a ChatterBox Communicator, a Bell Helmet wired with mics and my laptop with every cable known to man inside the bag. This weekend was no exception. I had all of this in tow. Just when I thought I had everything I needed to be a good driving coach I learned was how useful some of the new equipment out there can be from one of my students.

I get to the track on Saturday morning to be at the drivers meeting and to get setup for the day. That is when I met up with Chad to put my gear in his car and get the day started helping him to find some extra speed around the bumpy Sebring track. He had just bought one of GoPro’s new HD Hero Cameras and wanted to use it for the first time. This was great he had video and data that we could now use to help get him up to speed quicker. For the first couple of sessions he had the camera mounted to the rollcage for the classic in car camera shots. Then Chad decided let’s get some shots to see where I am positioning my head during these runs. This was great, he mounted this small camera to his helmet with some of the simple stick on tape mounts. His video was awesome. You could almost tell exactly where his eyes were looking from this new angle. What a great coaching tool. Check out one of the videos he shot with it here.

My plug for BimmerWorld is they are now a distributor of these cameras. James has them in the online store so if you are need of one check them out here GoPro HD at BimmerWorld. We have used these in the World Challenge cars and our Continental Tire Challenge cars with great success. Some of the cool stuff that can be done with the cameras is they can be mounted just about anywhere. They come with several different mounts, one of them is a suction cup mount so you can mount it outside of the car. Take a look on BimmerWorld Racing’s website in the media section where we have a lap around Barber Motorsports Park from different angles on the car. All of these pictures were taken with a GoPro camera. Here are a couple of samples:

And another cool use of the camera where my friends at DTOM Racing documented the building of their new E90 328 Continental Challenge car. Check out this cool video they shot with several of these cameras on a time delay.
